There is a particular hour in Northern California — just as the sun lowers behind the coastal hills — when everything turns to gold and the water goes perfectly still. LeeAnne Chappell has spent decades chasing that hour, setting up her easel in marshes and along tidal channels, letting the wind move through her brushwork and the light land where it will. This painting was born in one of those moments: a quiet waterway, the hills glowing chartreuse and amber behind a fringe of dark trees, the marsh grass at the edge gone deep violet in the fading warmth. The water in the foreground is the painting's quiet heart. Broad, unhurried strokes of lavender and pale rose carry the last of the sky's reflection across the surface, and a single warm gleam — the sun's echo — floats at the center of the channel. It is still, but not empty. It is waiting, the way water waits: patient, full of depth, holding everything it has witnessed. Chappell has always said that paths carry a sense of adventure and a willingness to explore. Here the waterway becomes its own kind of path — one that leads the eye and the spirit gently toward the light gathering at the horizon. It is a painting about arrival and openness, about the particular peace that comes from standing still long enough to let a landscape find you.
