There is a particular hour on San Pablo Bay — or perhaps along the Sonoma coast, or the edge of Point Reyes — when the reeds are the loudest thing in the world. They hiss and shiver, bending in complex conversation with a wind that comes off the water cold and bright. LeeAnne Chappell was there for that hour. You can feel it in every pulled stroke of green across this canvas: the urgency of light about to change, the pleasure of being exactly where you are supposed to be. The marsh opens generously before you. In the foreground, grasses crowd and overlap in every shade between yellow-green and deep teal, their movement frozen mid-breath. Beyond them, the estuary or bay lies still and lavender-pale — a mirror held up to a softly overcast sky. The hills on the far shore are wrapped in the dense, saturated green of coastal Northern California, and they recede gently, unhurried, into the haze. There is no drama here beyond the quiet drama of an ordinary afternoon made extraordinary by attention. Chappell has painted these places for more than thirty years, and what she carries into the field is not just a brush but a kind of devotion — to the particular green of California grass in spring, to the way fog diffuses light into something almost maternal in its softness. This painting is an invitation to stand in that field with her, to feel the damp air and hear the reeds, and to carry that feeling home.
