Late afternoon along the wetlands at the edge of San Pablo Bay, and the light is doing what Northern California light does best — turning the ordinary into something you have to stop and stare at. The water has gone cobalt and violet; the hills beyond have softened to olive and amber; and three snowy egrets are doing exactly what they always do, utterly unhurried, as if the world were made for them and the rest of us are simply visitors. LeeAnne Chappell has painted these wetlands many times. She knows the way the wind moves across the surface, the way bugs drift into the wet paint, the way the sky can shift from flat grey to glowing rose in the time it takes to mix a colour. What she has caught here is not just a scene but a relationship — between light and water, between birds and place, between the wildness still clinging to the California coast and the human impulse to bear witness to it before it changes. The three egrets carry the feeling of community, of shared presence in a world that asks nothing of them but their own instincts. In Chappell's hands they become emblems of what she has always painted toward: that restful visual space, familiar and luminous, where the viewer can pause, breathe, and feel briefly at home in the natural world.
