It is that narrow window of late afternoon, when the light turns unreasonably generous and everything it touches — steel, glass, water, concrete — seems briefly to remember it was once molten. LeeAnne Chappell stood at the edge of the Sacramento River and watched the Tower Bridge burn gold against a sky going soft with dusk. The river curved away from her, indifferent and enormous, carrying the city's reflection in long broken strokes of cobalt and violet, orange and pearl. She has been painting California for more than thirty years, and still the light surprises her. This moment on the Sacramento is the kind she paints toward — transient, almost theatrical, the kind that won't hold still. The twin towers of the bridge stand like sentinels in amber, the city behind them dissolving into warm haze, while the water in the foreground pushes forward in deep, muscular blues that anchor all that brightness. There is a tension between stillness and motion here, between the solidity of the bridge and the restlessness of the river, that feels true to the place and true to the way she works: fluid, responsive, alive to what is actually in front of her. This painting carries the feeling of a specific day, a specific hour — the kind that stays with you after you've left the riverbank. It is an invitation to stop, to look, and to feel the particular warmth of California light falling on water that has been running through this valley long before the bridge was ever built.
