She set up her easel somewhere on the golden hills of Marin — perhaps Lucas Valley, perhaps Tennessee Valley — where the grass turns that impossible electric green in the season just after rain. The hill rises steeply before her, its surface alive with shifting light, and she begins to paint. Not what she thinks a hill looks like, but what this hill feels like right now, in this wind, under this particular softness of a California sky that hasn't yet made up its mind between blue and lavender. In the lower left, a bare-limbed oak reaches its dark branches into the light, its rust-tinged foliage catching warmth like tiny flames. Further up the ridge, a cluster of oaks marks the crest before the land falls away into layers of hazy, receding hills. A thin pale line — a path, a road, an invitation — traces along the hillside's lower edge and disappears, as LeeAnne's paths always do, into somewhere just out of sight. You know where it might lead. You want to follow it. This painting holds the particular peace of a morning spent outdoors in full attention: the kind of quiet that isn't silence but presence. The transparency of the canvas glows through the meadow greens, giving the hill its inner light — as though the sun is not just landing on the grass but coming from beneath it. It is a painting about the generosity of the California landscape, and the gratitude of a painter who has spent a lifetime receiving it.
