She set up her easel at the edge of the marsh before the fog had fully lifted — that particular hour when the light is still deciding what it wants to be. The grasses in front of her were insistent, leaning into the frame, almost impatient to be painted. Beyond them, a slender channel of water held the sky in a quiet, mirror-blue embrace, and further still, the golden reeds stretched toward a tree line softened by distance and morning haze. She worked quickly, the way the marsh demanded, knowing that in an hour the light would be entirely different and the moment entirely gone. This is the landscape LeeAnne Chappell returns to again and again — the wetlands that edge San Pablo Bay, the places where land and water negotiate their borders in a language of reed and reflection. There is something deeply patient about a wetland, and yet always something changing: a bird lifting off, a ripple crossing the channel, the grasses tilting with a breath of coastal wind. Painting here, she says, reminds her to stay fluid, flexible, and open — values she holds as a painter and as a person. What the painting offers the viewer is that same quality of open attention — a place to rest the eyes and let the mind go still. The vivid greens and golds feel generous, the soft lavender sky feels forgiving, and the little thread of blue water threading through it all feels like a quiet invitation to follow it, to see where it leads.
