There is a particular hour on the Marin or Sonoma coast when the wind picks up and the grasses go from still to surging in an instant — every blade leaning in the same direction, the whole field suddenly a single living thing. LeeAnne Chappell was standing inside that moment when this painting was made. You can sense her adjusting her footing, squinting against the brightness, brushing quickly before the light shifts again. The grasses fill nearly the entire canvas, luminous and generous, ranging from acid yellow-green at their brightest to soft sage where the shadows pool. Far off, almost apologetically small, a dark barn sits beneath a gentle ridge. It is the kind of detail that earns its place by being almost missed — a reminder that people have been here, that the land has been tended, but that the grasses don't much care either way. The pale blue-grey sky above carries the softness of coastal fog not yet burned off. This is a painting about being present in a place that will not wait for you. LeeAnne has painted California's fields and hills for more than thirty years, and that accumulated knowing is what lets her distill a windswept meadow into something so fluent and free. Stand with it long enough and you will hear the grass move.
